Nuclear bone scans involve the injection of a radioisotope into a vein and photographing the skeleton several hours later using specialized nuclear medicine cameras. The isotope is deposited in areas of normal bone metabolism. Areas of abnormal bone metabolism absorb an abnormal level of the isotope.
