Fractured and dislocated shoulder. Coloured X-ray of the right-hand shoulder of an elderly patient who has fallen and fractured the upper arm bone (humerus) and dislocated the shoulder. The head of the humerus (upper centre) is where the bone has broken (best seen at lower left of the humeral head). The head of the humerus has also slipped out of its socket in the shoulder blade (upper right). The collarbone (clavicle) is above the shoulder blade, and some of the ribs are at right. The humerus will be surgically pinned and also manipulated back into position. The joint will be rested to allow the ligaments and other soft tissue to heal.
