This image is part of the feature Jefferson Lab

Caption: Jefferson Lab accelerator. View along a curved portion of the accelerator at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab. The accelerator ring is racetrack-shaped, and about 1. 4 kilometres long. Electrons introduced into the accelerator travel round the racetrack up to five times, reaching speeds close to that of light and energies of around 4 billion electron volts (GeV). Each curved end section has five beam pipes to deal with electrons of different energies, as they require different strengths of magnetic field to bend their beams. Jefferson Lab is at Newport News, Virginia, USA.
