Caption: Keloid scar on the chest wall of a 29-year-old women. A keloid is a greatly enlarged scar that grows beyond its original boundaries. It can itch, cause pain or be tender to the touch. During the normal healing process, a scar fills with collagen. Eventually, the collagen should break down, leaving a flat, small scar. However, the scar can overfill with collagen, causing it to swell and enlarge, forming a keloid scar. There is little understanding of why this happens and treatment is usually by re- excision and radiotherapy.
