Caption: Heart surgery scar. Scar and bruises on a woman's chest after heartport valve replacement surgery. Heartport surgery is a type of keyhole (minimally- invasive) surgery. It is less traumatic than open heart surgery, where the sternum is sawn open. There are four valves in the human heart, all of which prevent the backflow of blood. Damage to the valves can lead to malfunctioning of the heart and death. If a valve cannot be repaired it must be replaced.
