Caption: Intense reddening of the skin on a man's back and upper arm, resulting from 6 hours exposure to strong sunlight. The term sunburn covers damage to the skin from excessive amounts of sunlight. Although probably very tender to the touch, this case appears relatively mild. Extreme forms of sunburn may result in severe blistering of the skin (as with second-degree burns), and in the patient going into shock. On healing, the damaged skin sloughs off ('peeling').
