Caption: Third degree burn. Close-up of skin damaged by an extensive third degree burn. This burn was caused by a gas fire, and has completely destroyed the skin in the red areas. In cases like this, infection is common and hard to avoid, and the victim usually goes into shock, which may be fatal in itself. Most burns are due to accidents in the home. Burns are classified according to the damage they do. First degree burns include sunburn. If there is blistering and deeper skin damage, they are second degree burns. Third degree burns destroy the entire skin thickness, and may expose muscle and bone.
