Caption: Radiation burns on Yamaguchi, a boy from Nagasaki, Japan. The second-degree flash burns were caused by the atomic bomb that exploded above Nagasaki at 11:02am on 9 August 1945. At least 74,000 people died and 75,000 were injured. Another atomic bomb had previously been detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. These two atomic bombs led to the surrender of Japan to American forces, ending World War II. Photographed at Omura Naval Hospital in Nagasaki.
