Caption: Cannabis plant. Illustration of a plant of the Indian Hemp Cannabis sativa. The plant is an annual which grows up to 2.5 metres high. Its stem may be processed to yield rope fibre. However, it is as a narcotic that C.sativa is best known. The leaves may be dried or processed for their resin (known as marijuana or hashish), and smoked as a 'recreational' drug. Its active principle, tetrahydrocannabinol, induces euphoria and a relaxed state. Preparations from the plant were used historically in medicine, but were abandoned in the 1930s because of its potential for abuse. Artificial cannabinoids may be used to supress vomiting during cancer chemotherapy.
