Caption: Engraving (circa 1850) of the flowering parts of the foxglove, Digitalis sp. , the leaves of w are the source of the drug digitalis. The extract digitalis contains other substances including digitoxin & digoxin that stimulate heart muscle. Used to treat heart failure (ie in cases of coronary infarction - heart attacks), the drug is administered by mouth, or in serious cases by injection.
