Tea tree. Engraving of a tea tree, published in 1777 in a book recounting the voyages of James Cook. The tea tree is a shrub or small tree of the genus Leptospermum found in Australia and New Zealand, and it is thought that some species were used by Captain Cook and early settlers to brew tea. The oil of the tea tree has antiseptic properties.
