Caption: Cervical ribs. 13 year old girl exhibiting the congenital (from birth) abnormality of extra ribs. This can be seen more prominently on the girl's left side as a swelling above her collar bone. The extra ribs are located above the (normally) first ribs, from the seventh (bottom) cervical, or neck, vertebra. The presence of an extra rib is found in about 1 in 200 people. It is only in very rare cases that an individual has two cervical ribs, one on either side. For an X-ray of the patient see M350/371.
