This image is part of the feature Redesigning The Wheelchair

Credit: DAVID CONSTANTINE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Disability. Double above-the-knee amputee sitting in his wheelchair. This man lost his legs in a land mine explosion. Photographed in Afghanistan where the Motivation Charitable Trust began a project in 1996, in partnership with Sandy Gall's Afghan Appeal, to design a wheelchair for land mine victims. The chair is made from locally sourced materials and is built in a workshop in Afghanistan. Three wheels allow the user to cross rough ground more easily than in a conventional four-wheel chair. The platform above the small front wheel makes it easier for the user to transfer into and out of the chair.
