Caption: Borage. Flowers of the annual herb borage or starflower, Borago officinalis. This medicinal plant can be used in a compress to treat inflamed or irritated skin complaints such as dermatitis. Medical trials have also shown that borage extracts help cancer patients survive longer, though it does not cure the disease. It also contains gamma- linolenic acid, an important commercial oil used in health foods. Traditionally the leaves have been used in salads. The flowers are used as flavourings and to make blue dye. Borage grows wild in Britain and parts of Europe. Useful parts of the plant are gathered in spring and autumn.
