Caption: Deadly nightshade. Historical artwork of the leaves, root and fruit of the deadly nightshade, Atropa bella-donna. It is a very poisonous plant, but has medicinal uses. It is found throughout Europe, generally on high ground. Deadly nightshade contains the chemical atropine, which dilates the eyes, stimulates the central nervous system and causes the heart to beat rapidly. Preparations of deadly nightshade can be used as an anti-spasmodic, and medically atropine is used to dilate the pupil of the eye prior to examination. Deadly nightshade preparations should never be used by neurotic people or those with a heart condition.
