Caption: Baha hearing system. Man with a bone anchored hearing system (Baha), showing the external abutment. The Baha system offers a solution to those who cannot benefit from air conduction hearing aids. It works by amplifying sound vibrations and transmitting them (through the abutment) to a small titanium implant. The vibrating implant sets up vibrations within the skull and inner ear that finally stimulate the nerve fibres of the inner ear, allowing hearing. The system allows sound to be conducted through the bone rather than via the middle ear, a process known as direct bone conduction. For a picture showing how the sound processor connects to the abutment see image M362/0100.
