Caption: Nicotine inhaler. Hand holds a Nicorette nicotine drug inhaler in front of a healthy chest X-ray. Nicorette inhalers are used by people who want to give up smoking but who are addicted to the nicotine in cigarette smoke. 10mg nicotine-filled cartridges flavoured with menthol allow the drug to be inhaled into the lungs in a smoke free way. This provides about 30% of the nicotine of a cigarette, but is free of the tar which is a cause of lung cancer. Also the regular hand-to-mouth use resembles the habit of cigarette smoking. The inhaler reduces cigarette withdrawal symptoms in the first weeks after stopping smoking.
