Caption: Swirling colour pattern reflected from surface of a single soap bubble growing in a teacup. The pattern results from light interference which occurs through reflection on the thin film of the bubble. When the thickness of the film is comparable to wavelength of the incident white light, light waves reflected from back of film may be out of phase with light reaching the front; the result is an interference pattern. Colour arises from certain wavelengths comprising white light being extinguished in a region of the bubble where the thickness of the film produces interference effects.
