Caption: Needle marks in drug addict. Close-up of the wrist of an intravenous drug abuser showing a line of needle marks. The marks track along a vein on the underside of the left wrist (track marks). The substance of abuse is likely to be heroin, a white narcotic drug (like morphine) which is dissolved in water before injected. A makeshift tourniquet is used to dilate the superficial veins and provide a better target for the needle to 'hit'. Intravenous drug abusers risk the physical and psychological consequences of addiction, including the risk of needle infection.
