Caption: White henbane (Hyoscyamus albus) plant. This relative of henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) is one of the most poisonous plants found in Europe. The flowers are bell shaped and yellow but lack the purple veining characteristic of H. niger. The plant contains several alkaloid chemicals including scopolamine and hyoscyamine. These are used medicinally, mainly as analgesics (painkillers) and muscle relaxants. Photographed in Chania, Crete, Greece. Magnification: x2.2 at 35mm size.
