In EEG brain research, electrodes are attached to the head in order to measure the tiny electrical impulses produced by brain activity. The resulting pattern of "brainwaves" can be used to diagnose medical conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and to study states of consciousness such as meditation and sleep. Phrenology was a pseudo-science of the nineteenth century. Phrenologists believed that each mental characteristic, seen as a word on the model head, affected the shape of a person's head at a particular location.
