Castor oil plant. Flowers of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis), a shrub-like tree that is indigenous to tropical areas, where it can reach a height of 10 metres. It produces a seed that is used to produce castor oil. Castor oil is taken for its laxative effects. Another component of the oil is ricin, one of the most powerful poisons known.
