Caption: Radiographer. View of a radiographer studying a selection of CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain scans. CT scanning uses X-rays taken at different angles to build up images of slices through the patient. It is useful for studying soft tissues such as those of the brain, as abnormalities such as tumours show up very clearly. MRI scanning uses radio wave pulses and a magnetic field to provoke atoms in the body to release radio waves, which are detected and can be built up into a picture of the internal tissues. It is also useful for imaging tumours, as well as for locating strokes.
