The light guides transmit scintillations, or faint light flashes, produced when certain particles hit scintillation crystals. Liquid core light guides work like fibre optics and so carry light to a detector with little or no absorption. The light guides enable the position and number of particles from a nuclear reaction to be measured. The Jefferson Lab is at Newport News, Virginia, USA.
