Woman receiving gamma scan of her chest area. The gamma camera is a diagnostic device used widely in the detection & management of cancers - often as a means of detecting secondary disease after a patient has received treatment for their primary cancer. A gamma camera scan is a map of the distribution of radioactivity emitted from a short-lived radioactive tracer that is metabolized or is concentrated in the part of the body under investigation. Each burst of radiation is resolved as a flash of light by a crystal scintillator in the camera and processed electronically to provide an image.
