Endoscope scissors. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a bundle of human hairs being cut by endoscope scissors. Surgical tools such as this are used with an endoscope (a tube for looking inside the body) to cut small obstructions in the body. Endoscopy (often called "keyhole surgery") uses small tools which are introduced into the body through a small hole, and operated from outside the body. This technique does not cause scarring, and poses a lower risk of infection and complications than conventional "open" surgery. Convalescence time is also reduced. Magnification: x7 at 7x4.5cm size.
