Caption: Pill camera. Fingers holding a pill camera to show the lens area (black) and the clear plastic dome on its front. This device is swallowed by a patient to obtain video images of the digestive system. Six LEDs (light-emitting diodes) around the lens provide illumination. The digital images are transmitted by radio waves to an external recorder, allowing doctors to look for digestive disorders such as cancer. This is the PillCam, developed by the Israeli company Given. It has been approved for use in the USA and Europe since 2001. The PillCam weighs four grams, and runs on battery power, transmitting over 50,000 images over an eight-hour period.
