Caption: Capsule endoscope. Man about to swallow a capsule endoscope, which can provide real-time video images of the stomach and intestines using high-resolution charge-coupled device (CCD) technology. The capsule is just 26 millimetres long, with an external diameter of 11 millimetres, and has 6 white LED (light-emitting diode) lights at the end to provide a clear field of view. Also, automatic brightness control means illumination levels adjust to maintain optimal imaging. The pill causes no sensation after it has been swallowed, and the patient can carry on life as normal. Over a day, the pill moves through the digestive system and the radio antenna transmits two images per second to the recorder unit, allowing disorders, such as ulcers, to be found.
