Caption: Cholecystectomy. Surgeons perform a gallbladder removal operation (cholecystectomy), using a minimally-invasive laparoscope technique. A laparoscope (held by surgeon at right) contains a camera which provides a view of the gallbladder on the TV screen (upper centre). This view allows other surgeons to guide surgical instruments to the site, for example a drainage tube and a laser emitter to cut tissue. "Keyhole" surgery of this kind requires small incisions only, to remove the gallbladder. Cholecystectomy is performed to treat gallstones and severe inflammation of the gallbladder. Photographed at the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, Hong Kong.
