ECG. An elderly man receives an electrocardiograph (ECG) examination to monitor the health of his heart following heart surgery. Electrodes are attached to his chest and his surgical scar can still be seen. An ECG printout appears on the machine at right. ECG machines monitor electrical impulses made just before each heartbeat. The resulting trace can then be used to diagnose disorders of the heart, many of which produce a characteristic fingerprint pattern.
