Caption: Street lights and their spectra. The picture shows the spectroscopic properties of various types of street lights. The two white-yellow lights at bottom right are common filament lightbulbs. They emit continuous spectra (visible above them) with a peak intensity in the red band. The small light seen to the left of these two and the bright one on the bridge are mercury vapour lights. Their spectra are characterised by strong emission lines in the blue and green band. At bottom centre is a low-pressure sodium vapour light, glowing yellow- red. Its main feature is the presence of two strong emission lines (bright and small spot at centre) found very close in the spectrum.
