Woman undergoing plasmapheresis, a method for removing a quantity of plasma from blood & exchanging it with donated (transfused) plasma. A volume of blood is removed from the patient and the solid blood cells allowed to settle in a container. The fluid plasma is then drawn off the top of the mixture and the blood cells mixed with donor plasma before being transfused back into the patient's circulation. Plasma exchange has been used to reduce undesirable concentrations of plasma-bound agents in a number of conditions, including hyperlipidaemia & Goodpasture's syndrome (a respiratory disease).
