Caption: Blood pressure measurement. Blood pressure being measured on a patient's upper arm with a sphygmo- manometer. The cuff around this patient's arm is inflated with a hand pump (centre) until it stops blood flowing into the arm. The pressure at this point corresponds to the pressure during a heartbeat. The cuff is then deflated until blood flow resumes. This point gives the pressure between heartbeats. Blood pressure is an important measure of health and fitness. A healthy young adult typically has a reading of 110/75 mmHg (ex- pressed in millimetres of mercury).
