Caption: Blood stem cell harvesting. Woman attached to a blood cell separating machine during peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation. Transplants of blood stem cells, the precursors of all blood cells, are needed by some cancer sufferers. In leukaemia, for example, PBSC's replace the blood cells that are destroyed by anticancer treatment. Here, the donor has had her bone marrow stimulated to produce PBSC's, which are usually only found in low numbers in the blood, by an injection of natural growth factors. Her blood is being run through the separating machine, where the PBSC's are removed. This process is called leukapheresis.
