Caption: Umbilical cord blood. Gloved hand taking a bag containing blood harvested from a baby's umbilical cord out of storage in liquid nitrogen. This donated blood is a source of blood stem cells. These can be used to treat diseases like leukaemia, a cancer that causes the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Blood stem cells can specialize into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The umbilical cord connects the foetus to the placenta. Photographed at the London Cord Blood Bank, part of the National Blood Service, England.
