Caption: Measuring blood pressure. Patient having their blood pressure measured. A medical worker is using a stethoscope to listen to the patient's elbow pulse. A pressure gauge (at right) is used to read the pressure in the inflatable cuff on the patient's upper arm. The inflated cuff temporarily cuts off the blood flow. As it is deflated, pulsing blood flow resumes and a reading of the systolic pressure is taken. As the cuff is further deflated, smooth blood flow resumes and the diastolic pressure is recorded. Blood pressure is an important indicator of health. The gauge is giving a reading of around 115 mm Hg (millimetres of mercury), which is a low but still healthy systolic pressure. Photographed in the UK.
