Caption: Storing plasma from donor blood. Medical worker storing donor blood platelets and plasma in a deep-freeze storage area. The plasma and platelets are the mostly liquid component of the blood that remains after the red and white blood cells have been removed. Platelets help blood to clot, and plasma contains important blood chemicals. When needed, the donor platelets and plasma will be unfrozen and used in blood transfusions in hospitals for the injured and those being operated upon. Photographed in 2005, in Moscow, Russia.
