Caption: Intravenous drip. The arm of an adult patient receives an intravenous drip (infusion) in a hospital ward. Fluid is passing through tubing into a cannula (thin plastic tube) inserted into a vein in the patient's forearm. The fluid is stored in a container hung above the bed and is slowly introduced into the bloodstream. Intravenous infusions are commonly used to give blood or plasma to replace that lost in an accident or operation. Sugar and salt solutions may also be infused to replace or maintain body fluids in patients who are unable to eat or drink. Certain drugs can also be administered by intravenous infusion.
