Caption: Intravenous drip being adjusted by a nurse. A drip is used for the administration of fluids to a patient, usually through a vein in the forearm. An intravenous infusion, or drip, may contain saline, which is used to replace body fluids in dehydrated patients. Alternatively, drips may be used to give blood or plasma, to maintain body fluids in patients who are unable to drink or eat, or to administer certain drugs. The rate at which the fluid enters the circulation is controlled by an adjustable valve at the base of the bag.
