Photophone, or an image transfer system, which is capable of transmitting images down the telephone line to a second party. The small monitor on the right, carrying a computed tomography (CT) scan on its screen, is the actual photophone. Like the facsimile machine, a number is dialed and the 'send' button is pressed on the main machine. In the medical context photophones are used to acquire second opinions, for consultations and for advice. They are also used at conferences. The monitor and console at left are part of the CT scanner.
