Caption: Fetal surgery through an open uterus: the womb has been opened & the fetus reorientated so the lower body faces upwards; the umbilical cord is visible at left. This operation, at the Hopital- Saint-Vincent-De-Paul, France, on 22nd July 1991, was the first successful European attempt at such a technique. The 7-month fetus had a diaphragmatic hernia, a defect that resulted in the contents of her gut protruding into the chest cavity & obstructing lung development. Baby Alexandra was born on 30th July 1991 by Caesarean section at 30 weeks, with no complications & made a good recovery.
