Caption: Cleaning wound. Gloved surgeons hands prepare a wound for suturing. The wound is caused by a drained abscess and contains a yellow seaweed dressing. Seaweed dressings are special wet-wound dressings which absorb water and sodium salts at the wound to aid healing. After cleaning the wound the surgeon will suture the wound shut. An abscess is a collection of pus caused (usually) by bacterial infection. Surgical drainage is usually required together with antibiotics to kill the infection.
