Caption: Facial fracture surgery. Surgeon making an incision in the nasal area of a man with a serious facial fracture. The patient has suffered a fracture separating the bones of his face from the cranium (upper portion of the skull that encloses the brain). This is termed a Le Fort III fracture, after a classification system developed in 1900 by Rene Le Fort. This is a dangerous condition because if the ethmoid (a bone at the base of the cranium and the root of the nose) is broken, it can lead to leakage of the cerebrospinal fluid through torn membranes. After emergency treatment, surgical repair may be necessary.
