Caption: Liver cancer surgery. Surgery to remove a tumour (oval, centre left) from a patient's liver. Risk factors for cancer originating in the liver (primary liver cancer) include cirrhosis and infection with hepatitis B or C. Cancer originating in other organs often spreads to the liver, causing secondary tumours. Because the liver can heal and regenerate very effectively, surgery is a common treatment if the tumour is localised. Chemotherapy is also used.
