Severed Achilles tendon surgery. Surgical operation on an ankle which has suffered laceration to the Achilles tendon. The tendon connects the major muscles of the calf (the gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel bone (calcaneus). The tendon can be injured through direct trauma, but it is more commonly ruptured during exercise or in a trip or fall. The symptoms are pain, swelling and weakness in the ankle. Initial treatment is to apply a splint. Physiotherapy and surgery may be needed.
