Ankle surgery. Image 2 of 6. Surgeon using a scalpel to cut down to the bone while metal retractors hold back the skin. This operation is being performed to strengthen the ankle, which was weakened by a previous injury. It involves inserting screws to fuse the ankle's talonavicular joint (where the talus and navicular bones meet). Screws were also inserted into a tarsometatarsal (tarsal and metatarsal bones) joint in the foot to relieve arthritis caused by the injury. For a series of images showing this procedure, see M551/535 - M551/540.
