Preparing for surgery. A nurse prepares a female patient for general anaesthesia prior to surgery. The patient is lying in bed. A Venflon cannula has been inserted into a vein in the back of her hand and a pulse meter is clipped to her finger. A cannula is a small, open-ended tube that can be inserted into a vein and then taped in place to deliver intravenous drugs as needed. In surgery a cannula is used to deliver a pre-operative anaesthetic that induces unconsciousness.
