Anaesthetist. Anaesthetist in surgical dress beside anaesthetic equipment during an operation. The equipment supplies anaesthetic gases or liquids that maintain the unconsciousness of the patient. At upper right is a vital signs monitor, which measures the patient's heartbeat and breathing. Below this are gas canisters and at bottom centre dials to ensure the correct mixing of these gases. Anaesthetists are not only responsible for inducing and maintaining general anaesthesia, but must also keep a careful watch on the patient's vital signs throughout an operation and during recovery afterwards.
