Pre-operative patient. Surgeons checking a male patient prior to surgery. The female surgeon is adjusting his breathing tube, while the male surgeon checks his pulse rate using the carotid artery of the neck. The patient has electrodes on his chest which are connected to an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor his heartbeat. He is under general anaesthetic, so he can be operated on without causing pain, and muscle relaxants to allow him to be moved easily. The breathing tube in his mouth (lower right) is connected to a respirator to keep him breathing for the duration of the drug's effects.
