Caption: Heart-lung machine. Diagram of a heart-lung machine in action. This machine takes over the function of the heart and lungs during heart surgery. The heart is stopped by an infusion of a cold, cardioplegic solution. Blood is taken via cannulas (tubes) from the right atrium (RA) and left ventricle (LV) and pumped through an oxygenator, which adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. The oxygenated blood is cooled in a heat exchanger to maintain mild hypothermia during surgery (increasing the body's tolerance to lack of oxygen) and pumped back into the body via the aorta. The heart is cooled by a flow of very cold saline, limiting damage due to lack of oxygen.
